TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Has Aversion to Racing at Times GOOD PASSAGE HAMMERED BY RIDER

(BY

“THE GRAFTER."

Good Passage has shown a distinct aversion to racing at times, and the dislike may date back to the time an unthoughtful rider hammered her unmercifully in the early days of her career. Of late the four-year-old Winning Hit—Fast Passage mare has been sprinting in splendid style at Riccarton, and she will be in fine shape for the Dunedin meeting later on in the month.

From seven starts last season she had a record of two wins, one second and two thirds.

Fast Passage was a grand staying mare a few seasons ago, winning the New Zealand and Auckland Cups in 1932.

If she settles down to race generously, Good Passage will make a name for herself. So far she is doing her work well, but it remains to be seen how she will act on race day. It is in her favour that when last raced over a year ago she showed winning form.

Jockey Premiership. When H. N. Wiggins and W. J. Broughton were suspended for two months they were at the head of the winning jockeys’ list with 40 and 33 wins respectively. There will be a lot of racing during the interval before they return to race riding, and with 23 wins to his credit P. Atkins and B. H. Morris with one less should both head them off. Last Link Retired. His owner, G. A. Fielding, has decided to retire Last Link from racing. Now 11 years old. the Last Dart —Lady Links gelding has been a useful performer for Fielding, winning both on the flat and over hurdles. A New Zealand Success. The Kismet Stakes, chief race at the South Australia Trotting Association fixture at Wayville on January 20, was won by the unhoppled New Zealandbred Takanini, whose-mile rate of 2.18 4-5 for a mile and three-quarters was easily the fastest recorded at the meeting. Takanini is by Grattan Loyal from Choice, by Logan Pointer, and on the maternal side traces back to Hambletonian, Bell Boy and Galindo. Takanini was at one stage in F. J. Smith’s stable, but did not race, being handed over to G. Gath, who has done remarkably well with the pacer since racing him free-legged, Takanini’s Wayville win was not too popular, as in some previous runs he did not go well. A judicial inquiry into the form was opened and adjourned.

Fearless Fox in Class by Himself.

Fearless Fox was regarded as in a class by himself in the Quality Nursery Handicap run at Randwick, which provided for a maximum weight of 9.0 and a minimum weight of 7.0. Some of his backers secured even money, but mostly he was at odds on. Fearless Fox took some little time to become balanced. He was sixth when the field settled down, and still held that position at the home bend. He responded gamely to the demands of his jockey, D. Munro, and though he swerved in and interfered with Air Link in the straight, he did well when straightened up and won by threequarters of a length from the lightlyweighted Foxford, who had been one of the leaders throughout. Air Link fought on determinedly to secure third prize, and was followed by Our Barney and Mark Twain. Fearless Fox’s sire, Foxbridge, was not entered for either the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes or the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes. Fearless Fox will not have the chance to prove his class in those races, but he is a likely visitor to Melbourne for the autumn meetings. Captain Bruce in Great Order. Captain Bruce, a failure in nine starts this season, built up in fine style while spelling and is in great order to undergo the more serious stages of a preparation. The Captain Btinsby—Lady Bruce gelding, a chestnut in colour, showed winning form in his final start last season, the Kennels Hack Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting, but he looks much stronger now.

Cetewayo Under Offer.

Cetewayo, unbeaten in his only start to date, is reported ,to be under offer to an Australian trainer. Trained by G. W. New at Awapuni for the Taranaki sportsman. Mr J. C. Moore, Cetewayo is a bay colt by Phaleron Bay from Chelae.

At Trentham last October, Cetewaro made a big impression through the easy manner in which he won the Taita Handicap, leading all the way.

Few of the two-year-olds have carried on with a winning way this season. but Cetewayo is regarded as being well above the average. Chelae is particularly well-bred, being a sister in blood to Trivalve, a Melbourne Cup winner and a sister to Herowinkie, the dam of the Melbourne Cup winner. Hall Mark. Defaulter Should Soon be Ready. Defaulter has come through another week of his preparation in the right way, and has been keen to increase the speed in many of his daily tasks. He should be ready for a race in the Hazlett Gold Cup at the Dunedin meeting, and the others will have the job in front of them to make him gallop properly.

Palmyra Well Conditioned.

Palmyra, which may possibly start racing again at the Hokitika meeting, is carrying plenty of condition just now.. In the past she has proved a useful proposition on the West Coast, just falling short of the standard required for metropolitan meetings. Last season she had three wins, three seconds and one third in eleven starts as evidence of her honesty on race days. Kilrobe was turned out recently, but became so fresh that H. Nurse had to put her in light exercise again. With five successes and many placed efforts this season Kilrobe has been a payable proposition for her ownertrainer.

Doubleack on Easy List,

Doubleack. with four wins to his credit this season, has failed to stand up to training, and is at present spelling. While it is unfortunate for his owner, 'Mr E. C. Govan, and the Invercargill trainer, R. E. McLellan, that Doubleack should have to be eased up just now, he is a young horse, and the spell may' prove to be all to the good in the long run. But no trainer prefers an unsound horse to a sound one, and it is hoped that Doubleack will come back into work in good order.

A four-year-old brown gelding by Balboa from Morse Signal, Doubleack graduated from hack ranks this season, and was one of the most promising stayers in Southland. His most important success was in the Wyndham Cup, while at his last appearance he was the runner-up to Mona’s Song in the Southland Handicap.

Boswell, another member of McLellan’s team, is also, enjoying a short spell. His principal mission in the autumn will be the Riverton Cup.

Though he has the useful record of two wins, two thirds and one fourth this season in as many starts, Boswell's form over a middle distance has been disappointing, and it looks as though he is going to do best up to a mile. Last season, lack of stamina lost him several races, and the same thing may happen this season. He is a five-year-old chestnut horse by Balboa from Celerity 11. a smart English-bred mare.

Retrogression Sold. The two-year-old Retrogression, by Magnus, from Retrospect, winner of the Lyttelton Plate on Saturday, was yesterday sold by the trustees of Sir Charles Clifford’s estate to a patron of Mrs J. Campbell's stable. The colt will have his first race in his new colours at the Dunedin meeting. RACING FIXTURES February 8 and 10.—Egmont. February' 10 and 12. —Poverty Bay.
