BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
MRS G. BUTCHER. On old resident of Masterton, Mrs G. Butcher, who arrived in New Zealand with her parents in the sailing, ship Buckinghamshire in 1874, celebrated her 70th birthday recently, and her family gave a tea in her honour in the Odd Fellows Hall, Masterton. All her six children with their husbands and wives were present. The eldest of Mrs Butcher’s 26 grandchildren, who were all present, proposed the toast of her health which was drunk with musical honours. The 70 candles on a beautifully decorated cake were lighted by two granddaughters. At a reception and dance held later, Mrs Butcher was the recipient of good wishes and congratulations from many relatives and friends, who expressed pleasure at her continued good health and energy, despite her strenuous life. A very happy gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” and the National Anthem.
