WELLINGTON MEETING CHIEF EVENT TO GREAT JEWEL A WIN FOR CLUB KING.

The Wellington Trotting Club's Centennial meeting was opened in beautiful weather yesterday before a large attendance, who thoroughly enjoyed a splendid day’s racing. Great Jewel continued his winning way by capturing the Centennial Handicap after being in the lead throughout. Had Pot Luck not ruined his chance at the start Great Jewel’s task would have been more difficult, but nevertheless he paced a splendid race and on the running thoroughly deserved to win. There was an unfortunate happening in the Progressive Handicap. Premier falling and causing Bill Grattan’s driver to fall from his sulky. Fortunately neither of the reinsmen concerned was seriously hurt. Betting on the machine was spirited, the sum of £24,951 10s being handled, an increase of £6234 10s over the corresponding day of last year.
