AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MASTERTON CLUB. LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club held a successful meeting last night before a large gathering of spectators. The achievements of the local athletes at various outside meetings shows that at the present time the Masterton Club is probably the strongest Country Club in the Dominion. The club's handicapper, Mr J. Nyhan handicapped last night's events so well that there were several exciting finishes in especially the senior 100yds handicap. In the junior high jump three competitors were equal for second place, while the winner gained the decision by half an inch.

J. Eastwood showed true form in winning the 100 yards in fast time. D. Stratton, after pulling a muscle not so long ago. has now come back into the limelight defeating A. E. Edwards for second place.’ At the Triangular contest at Petone on Saturday, Stratton made no race of the 220 yards winning by at least 8 yards. J. Harrington won the junior 100 yards handicap all the way from scratch. This boy has improved greatly during the past few weeks, and should do better still in the future. S. Faulknor ran his usual solid race to beat M. Doyle.. Faulknor. by the way, ran a great race in the junior 1 mile at the meeting last Saturday, being well up in second position. A very good effort indeed. The J-mile handicap resulted in a well deserved win for R. Wyeth, who had the scratch marker W. A. Pullar extended. Wyeth has run some good races lately, especially at Petone on Saturday, winning the mile in 4min 37sec. Wickens the third man, finished with a great burst of speed defeating M. Sellar very narrowly.
