SWIMMING BATH PROPOSAL
TQ BE SUBMITTED TO RATEPAYERS. A proposal to be placed before the ratepayers of Masterton at a later date is for the provision of an up-to-date swimming pool for the town, the alternatives being for a closed-in tepid bath or an open-air cold bath. The primary reason for having a swimming pool today is to give every person ar. opportunity to learn swimming and life saving. Secondly, it is one of the finest health giving recreations and is being fostered the world over as such. The proposal is to be placed before the ratepayers at the same time as the Waterworks Improvement, Loan and i is entirely in their hands to say whether it is to be approved or not. anc nothing is being done to interfere witl the ratepayers’ rights by obtaining special powers to raise the money withoir a poll. There are about six school ant private swimming pools in the town but the public have no rights or access to these ;hence the desire of th Masterton Borough Council to give tin ratepayers the opportunity to say whether there shall be a modern, hygiene pool in the place of the baths at presen in use. which, while they have served a very useful purpose during the pas 30 or 40 years, are now considered by supporters of the proposal to have now outlived their usefulness. The loca’ body does everything possible to kee, the pools as hygienic and as safe as pos sible from a health point of view. bu‘ even this is said to be far from satisfactory compared with the standard sc for modern, pools, the water from manybeing classed as chemically and bac teriologically pure after twelve month continuous use. This condition can only be obtained by the use of the latest type of filtration and sterilising plant used in a modern bath.
