CARTERTON

BOY SCOUTS

DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting of the District Committee of the Wairarapa Boy Scouts’ Association held in the Bandroom. Hollowaj Street, there were present Messrs A. Campbell Pearce (chairman). N. C. C. Shepherd (Commissioner), J. A. Halpin (District Scoutmaster), Miss G. McTaggart (District Cubmaster). Messrs P. Ryan. A. T. Cook, H. T. Ray. A. Allsop, C. E. White. J. Kerslake. J. Harkness. J. Huntley, W. G. Morris, H. J. Farley, L. Askew Miss J. Edge, C.M.. Miss H. Herdman. A.C.M., Mr and Mrs Patterson. On the motion of Mr Huntley it was resolved that the Scout Rally be held in Carterton on March 2, provided a suitable ground is available. The programme was left in the hands of the District Scoutmaster. On the motion of Mr Cook it was resolved that the catering arrangements be left in the hands of the Carterton committee, and that the District Committee pay for cordials for the scouts. It was resolved that Mr H. Clark, of Featherston, be the examiner in the ambulance section and the appointment of other examiners be left to the Commissioner and District Scoutmaster. On the motion of Mr Kerslake. Mr H. J. Fairchild, Masterton, was appointed district secretary in place of Mr P. Wingfield who has left the district. On the recommendation of the District Cubmaster Miss E. Gregor, Greytown, who holds the Gilwell scarf and service medal, was appointed Assistant District Cubmaster. The District Cubmaster (Miss McTaggart) reported that the cub rally was held on the Carterton Showgrounds on December 2. The Rally was very well attended despite wet weather. Competition was keen among the packs represented from Featherston to Eketahuna and resulted in a win for the Mo Katoa Pack, Masterton, under the leadership of Miss Shoosmith. by a fair margin. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Carterton committee for attending to the catering arrangements, and to Mr L. H. Smart for donating the amount due for hiring the showgrounds. It was resolved that the next meeting of the committee be held at Greytown on a date to be fixed by the chairman and Commissioner.

CARD TOURNAMENT The weekly carfl tournament in connection with the Boy Scouts was held in the Band Room last evening. There was a good attendance and the prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs W. Ticehurst, 1; Mrs R. Banks, 2. Men: Mr A. Knutson, 1; Mrs Patterson (act-I ing), 2. At the close of play supper was handed round. BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS. On the Carterton green last evening Cleo. Hart defeated Barber in a champion singles game. The result leaves all contestants with one life. At the weekend" the annual fixture between the Carterton and Eketahuna clubs will be played on the Eketahuna green. At the afternoon tea adjournment of the Carterton Bowling Club last Saturday occasion was'taken to welcome Sir H. E. Hart, who has been on holiday leave in New Zealand. Mr Gordon Hughan, one of the oldest members of the club, said that- the Carterton bowlers were glad to have with them Sir Herbert Hart, who was well known to most of the members, having been born and educated in the district and prior to his taking part in the Great War of 1914-18, had practiced his calling as a barrister and solicitor in Carterton for many years. Sir Herbert, he understood would soon be leaving New Zealand again, and on behalf of Ihe Carterton Bowling Club and its members he wished him a safe and pleasant voyage. Sir Herbert returned thanks for the warm welcome given him and the kindly words expressed. Personal Items. Mrs F. A. Nightingale is spending a holiday in Wellington. Mr and Mrs G. S. Bruce and family are visiting Wellington. Mrs G. Butler, of Kent Street, who has been visiting Napier, returned home yesterday. Mr and Mrs A. W. Beale, of Carterton. will leave for Gisborne at the weekend on a visit to their daughter and son-in-law. Petrol Restriction. Petrol restrictions came into force in Carterton this morning. Dairy farmers in some instances complain that the restriction is too severe upon them. They maintain that it will be impossible for them to reach dairy factories and return 7 days a week on the allotment of petrol made to them. Vital Statistics. The following are the vital statistics for January (the figures in parentheses being for the corresponding month last year):—Births, 2 (8); marriages, 4 (3); deaths. 1 (5).
