NO CHALLENGES THIS YEAR. RESUMPTION UNLIKELY DURING WAR PERIOD. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE. January 31. As iio challenges for the Davis Cup have been received today by the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia the competition lapses for 1940 and Australia retains the cup. No challenges are expected for the duration of the war. The regulations require challenges to be received by the holding nation not later than. January 31 in the year of play. Mr IT. A. Pitt, acting-chairman, said at the annual conference of the Lawn Tennis Association today that it was unthinkable that Australia would be challenged in the present international circumstances.
