FUEL OIL
, PRODUCED FROM KAURI PEAT . AT COST OF UNDER TWOPENCE PER GALLON. MELBOURNE CHEMIST’S CLAIM. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, January 30. Success is claimed by a Melbourne analytical chemist, Mr S. Roose Trevor for his experiments in producing fuel oil from New Zealand kauri peat. Mr Trevor claims that his experiments have shown that 30 gallons of crude oil can be obtained from a ton of kauri peat at a cost of under twopence per gallon. He says if the byproducts of distillation are used, the cost of production would be below the cost of crude oil in' any of the world’s bore wells.
According to an analysis made by a Victorian Mines Department 'assayer, the sample of crude oil supplied bj' Mr Trevor’s plant contained 13 per cent of light oil. Mr Trevor believes the New Zealand Government will interest itself in exploiting the process.
