REGENT THEATRE
“THE WARE CASE.”
Clive Brook, whose film appearances have, alas, been too rare during the last few years, makes a welcome reappearance in the A.T.P. production, "The Ware Case,” which will come to the Regent Theatre tonight, and it isdoubtful if the popular star has ever been seen to better advantage. He brings to the part of Sir Hubert Ware a skill and understanding calculated to make you like the character, although his morality and general behaviour do not bear examination. Sir Hubert is popular with, everybody, loved by his wife, even worshipped by his men friends, although time after time they have to rescue him from the consequences attaching to dud cheques. When the revelation about such a cheque comes near, r-rtr Hubert runs off to Monte Carlo in the hope of being able to raise the money. And although his luck at the Casino is not all that he hoped it would be, the irresponsible
baronet returns home, seemingly convinced that the trip had been worth while, in that it had supplied the charming means for another flirtation. The story moves on to its dramatic climax when the body of Sir Hubert’s rich brother-in-law is found drowned in the lake after dinner one night. Then comes the trial scene, with Sir Hubert in the dock and everybody convincing themselves that such a “good fellow” couldn’t possibly be guilty of
murder. Just whether or not Sir Hubert is found guilty it would not be fair to disclose here. Jane Baxter, as Lady Ware, and Barry K. Barnes as Michael Adye, Sir Hubert’s best friend and the .man who defends him at the Old Bailey, give performances worthy of this memorable picture. Adding to the charm of the film is the splendid manner in which Lady Ware stands by her husband when he needs her most. Patrons will certainly enjoy every minute of “The Ware Case.” A superb array of featurettes complete a really outstanding programme.
