About a thousand people, including some women, are fighting a fire which is raging on a 30-mile front in Sutton Forest and the Mossvale area. The fires so far have‘swept 30.000 acres in the Sutton Forest. Hundreds of Sydney people responded to broadcast appeals for fire volunteers and, aided by busloads of police from Sydney, fought the flames last night. Five hundred others are standing by in the township of Exeter, which was destroyed in last year’s fires, and is again threatened. The governor. Lord Wakehurst, was among those who fought the fire at Mossvale. He joined a band of firefighters for three hours, while Lady Wakehurst, with other women helpers, distributed refreshments to the men.
