CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Auckland Midsummer Meeting PROSPECTS OF VARIOUS COMPETITORS
(By
“THE GRAFTER.”)
There will be a number of first class performers at the Auckland Ra'cing Club’s meeting, which will commence tomorrow. The chief interest will be centred in the Takapuna Cup and in the open sprint, the Zealandia Handicap. In the Takapuna Cup there are some well known horses and the race will be a difficult one to pick. The topweight is Royevrus, who finished second to Cheval de Volee in the Auckland Cup. At his last start Royevrus ran unplaced in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap with 8.9 and now has 31b more over a furlong less. If at his best he can be expected to make a solid showing, but, there may be a disposition to place more confidence in W. Townsend’s other representative, Our Jean. Consistency has been a feature of the form this season of Our Jean, who has been steadily improving, and was third at her last start with 7.4 in the Nathans Memorial Handicap, one and a-quarter miles, on the final day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Another furlong might not trouble Our Jean.
Improvement upon his running at Thames will be necessary from King Key if he is to win with 8.12. The chances are he will run his usual honest race, but he does not appeal as much as the Goldfields Cup winner, Mintlaw, whom he will meet on 'only 61b better terms. Mintlaw is an improver who did well in winning at his first attempt over a middle distance and the manner in which he finished at the end of a mile and a-quarter indicate? that an extra furlong would not be beyond him. Mintlaw seems to run his best races when allowed to get well balanced early, and he should give a good account of himself on this occasion, writes “Archer” in the “New Zealand Herald.”
As the winner of the Auckland Racing Club Handicap Royal Appellant is entitled to considerable respect, even though he has 131 b more on this occasion. There has been nothing special about his work in the meantime, but he has trained on very satisfactorily, and it should not be for lack of condition if he fails to run prominently. The good three-year-old Fils de Vaals ran disappointingly at Trentham, but has a chance to make amends with 8.4, which is 181 b more than he carried successfully in the Summer Cup. It is some time since Kelly was successful and, although he has been working well again, he might need a little more racing to bring him to winning form in this class. Namara is a possibility with 8.0 after his success at Thames on Monday, especially as he will be meeting Mintlaw on 91b better terms than in the Goldfields Cup, in which he ran disappointingly.
The distance is likely to trouble Pirate King, and he does not appeal as much as Saccone, who stays well. Saccone was far from disgraced when he ran unplaced in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, and has an undoubted chance, especially as he will be meeting the winner on 11 Jib better terms. The improving three-year-old Proud Fox, who has three successive wins to his credit, is just out of the hack class, but he is a good galloper, who should not find success in an important handicap beyond him. He is a resolute finisher, and will have many friends if started here in preference to the Rangitoto Handicap, for which he is also an acceptor. Ivy Willonyx has been working well, and is a possibility in spite of recent failures. The maiden three-year-old Pern is working nicely again after a mishap that placed him out of action during the summer carnival, and his first attempt over a middle distance is awaited with interest. It should be a good betting race, and some who may be in demand are Our Jean, Proud Fox, Mintlaw and Saccone.
Some smart sprinters appear in the Zealandia Handicap. A good effort may be expected from the top-weight, Orwere, who was a winner at the summer carnival at Ellerslie, and also ran second to Arvakur on the final day. Orwere is handily placed with 7.13, or 41b more than he had at his last start, ando it is in his favour that he is a brilliant beginner. Maxam failed unaccountably at Thames last Saturday, when her running was too bad to be true, and it appeared as if she were off’ colour on the day. If she freshens up in the meantime she should go well.
The three-year-old Brazen Bold won in good style on the second day at Thames and, with 7.12, is capable of running the distance smartly. Sunola disappointed when he ran unplaced in the Goldfields Cup, but his form over shorter distances has been good, and he should be dangerous. Saxon Tor, an improving three-year-old trained by H. Dulieu at New Plymouth, has shown good form among the hack sprinters, and promotion to open company should not prevent him from achieving further success. Corato disappointed on the second day at Thames after running a good third on Saturday, and does not appear to have struck his best yet this season. On his day he is difficult to beat.
The latest form of Sebrof in the hack class has been good, and the manner in which he has been working indicates that he will run well. Foxmond failed to show her best at Thames, but may be all the better for the racing. She is good -when in form and a repetition of her best would make her very dangerous. Gamos can be relied upon for a solid effort and Aero King, who did well last season, is showing signs of regaining form. Brazilian has been disappointing and will require to show improvement if he is to succeed in this company. The favourites may include Orwere, Sunola, Sebrof and Saxon Tor.
