TIGER LILIES

ARE EASY TO GROW. The tiger lilies are something of a family in themselves and two of the best known are L. tigrinum splendens and the taller L. tigrinum Fortune!. The latter is the tallest of the tiger lilies and can be grown to a height of six feet, the stems carrying as many as fifty blooms. Splendens, although not so tall, is more brilliant, a rich fiery red with richly spotted flowers and it is also endowed with a constitution to be envied. Perhaps the best of all the double flowered lilies, L. tigrinum flore pleno, has also its admirers, though in the eyes of many, a double lily is not a thing of beauty. Tiger lilies are easy to grow. The varieties mentioned are stem rooters—that is, they form a second and distinct root system above the bulb and are therefoie appreciative of a soil which is not exposed to the full force of the sun’s rays during the summer months. Nevertheless, they can be grown in full sun though where beds which have no respite from the sun have to be planted, it is really better to make a choice of some suitable carpeting plants which will shade the lower part of the lily stems as well as the surface soil.
