HEAT WAVE
TEMPERATURES SOAR IN NEW SOUTH WALES BUSH FIRES RAGING IN MANY DISTRICTS. FIREMAN KILLED AND SEVEN INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, SYDNEY. January 25. New South Wales is at present gripped by a heat wave, the back country centres recording temperatures up to 114. Sydney reached 106.3 this afternoon, the highest since January 14 last year, when it topped 113. Bush fires have been raging all the week in the surrounding suburbs. A fireman was killed and seven injured today when an engine dashing to a lire overturned, pinning the crew beneath it.
Many homes were menaced. but were saved either by the efforts of firefighters or by a fortunate change of wind.
