A HOLLYWOOD JOKE
DEANNA AND MARLENE. CAUSE OF FIRST MEETING. Deanna Durbin and Marelene Dietrich met for the first rime recently, and it happened because of a Hollywood joke. The two stars have been working on nearby sets, Deanna in “First Love" and Marlene in “Destry Rides Again," but they have been so engrossed in their own affairs they never had a chance to shake hands.
Recently Deanna was recording “One Fine Day,” from the opera “Madame Butterfly." Joe Pasternak, producer of both the Durbin and Dietrich pictures, was on hand, and when it came time to play back Deanna's number he slyly had the sound trick of Marlene's rowdy cowboy tune "Little Joe” played instead. The look on Deanna’s face when she first heard Marlene’s throaty voice
giving out a cowboy’s yell, when she had been expecting to hear her own dulcet tones, was really funny. Marlene heard about it, of course, and she took time off from her own filming to visit Deanna and join in the laugh. By that time, everyone, including Deanna, was laughing.
