ACCEPTANCE OF AMERICAN SAFETY ZONE ANNOUNCEMENT BY FRENCH GOVERNMENT. RIGHTS UPHELD MEANTIME. iy Telegrapn—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) PARIS. January 23. The Government has announced that French and British ships in the 300mile American safety zone would counter-attack and fire on German ships. A spokesman added that such a right was irrenouncable. American governments desirous of making the safety zone real must give assurances that German would not send warships there. American governments in whose ports Germans took refuge must ensure their staying there. The .French Navy would continue to warn ships when it intercepted enemy messages A final adoption of the neutrality zone plan might be worked out on that basis, provided all. belligerents agreed to the proposal.
