A communique states: “The Russians near Kitela lost. 123 men. AVe repulsed attacks at, Loimola on the Lake Ladoga, front, killing 450, besides gaining successes farther north from Lake Ladoga.’’. “The Russians mounted loud-speak-ers on the Taipale front and exhorted us to surrender, declaring that Viborg was doomed and that Germans were marching to aid the Russians and would slaughter us. Our guns silenced the enemy batteries, after which we shattered an enemy concentrated infantry attack almost before it was launched, strewing the battlefront with dead.”

A Russian communique announces that there were small skirmishes on all fronts, and artillery activity. The battle on the Salla front grimly continues, stated an earlier report. Finnish patrols are systematically separating Russian detachments from the main force and driving others northward from Markijarvi, where they have been attempting to make a stand. The fugitives left many dead and much war material. The remaining batteries continued to shell the Finnish lines, and planes are bombing the Finnish columns.

The Russians, in night raids in this sector, are dropping flares by parachutes in order to detect targets. The Finns are steadily gaining ground south of Markijarvi. Russian prisoners admit, a serious shortage of petrol.

It is asserted that the Petsamo front has been reinforced from the sea.

FLANK ATTACKS REPULSED BY FINNS. BOMBERS DAMAGE RUSSIAN WARSHIPS. Further Finnish successes were reported from Helsinki yesterday, a radio message states. New Russian offensives on the Karelian Isthmus and in the Lake Ladoga area have been repulsed. It is also announced that Soviet warships were damaged in the recent raid by Finnish planes on Kronstadt. The Soviet attacks were launched at three points on Monday. In each the object was to outflank the Finns, but all were unsuccessful. The Mannerheim Line was heavily bombarded and an attempt made to outflank the Finns. To the north of Lake Ladoga the Russians tried another flank attack by moving round the edge of the Lak®. At another point, 40 miles to the' north, similar tactics were adopted. All were driven back.

On the Salla front, one report states, the Russians have been driven out of Markijarvi. and have retired to prepared positions. The Finns admit that on this front the Russians have been more successful in patrol warfare, and that thej' have been using patrols to protect their communications.

The Finns claim that 100 Russians were killed, and some tanks destroyed in the repulse of five separate attacks earlier between the Karelian Isthmus and middle Finland. It was reported that the Russians were moving back the greater part, of their heavy material.

Two of the attacks were made northeast of Lake Ladoga, and in one of them the Russians lost about 450 men and five tanks. In the other, three Russian officers and 120 men were killed, and five tanks and two armoured cars were destroyed.

On the south side of the lake on the Karelian Isthmus 120 dead have been counted, and on J.he ground in front of the lines lie the bodies of several hundred others.

On Finlands home front there was another air raid, and some buildings were set on fire.
