PASTURE SEEDS

SHORTAGE OF SOME LINES POSSIBLE. ' STEPS TO REMEDY POSITION.

“It is unfortunate that the type of spring we have had did not lead to any great surplus of growth which could be saved for a grass seed harvest,” states Mr N. Lamont, chairman of the Masterton Primary Production Council. “In consequence, there is still likely to be a shortage of good quality ryegrass seed for pasture sowings next autumn and spring. In many cases, however, something can still be done to remedy the position. "The few good rains we have experienced have enabled pastures to produce a fair amount of seed-head, even if there is little bottom growth, and with the dry weather being experienced conditions for stripping are almost ideal. Farmers who possess a stripper, or who can beg, borrow or otherwise obtain one. are urged to make maximum use of' this handy implement. When machine dressed, much of the seed obtained in this way, could be certified in the "commercial certified’ class and would do a great deal towards easing the position so far as the supply of good quality seed is concerned.

“There seems little doubt also that there will, be quite a serious shortage of white clover seed this year—but again it is still possible that growers on the heavier country at least will be able to save seed. Areas have been noted where the rains of the past month have brought away quite a _ good growth of white clover and again the present weather will assure good ripening conditions. "It should hardly be necessary to point out that by supplying a hungry market, growers are not only performing a service to the community but are also assured of a profitable return for their efforts.” .
