FISHING FOR WHALES
NEW THRILL FOR SPORTSMEN. WINNIPEG. A new thrill for sport fishermen has been developed. White whales, which weigh from 1,000 to 1,500 pounds and measure from 12 to 15 feet, are abundant in the historic Hudson Bay in Canada’s northland. During the past summer a number of sport fishermen have tried their hand at catching and landing these sea mammals. Two sportsmen from the United States landed a large whale after a long fight in the open bay. Another fishing enthusiast, a doctor from The Pas. north of this city, landed two in one morning. White whales have no commercial value but are prized by Indians and Eskimos who use the oil for heating and lighting and the blubber as food for their sleigh dogs.
