STORM' IN THE MACKENZIE COUNTRY LOSSES OF SHORN SHEEP. HEAVY RAIN THROUGHOUT SOUTH CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, This Day. One of the heaviest January snowstorms on record swept the Mackenzie Country on Saturday, causing death and severe hardship amongst newly-shorn sheep. Down country there was heavy rain over the weekend and minor flooding occurred in some areas. The rain was general throughout South Canterbury district, in which it commenced on Saturday morning at three o’clock. It was still raining lightly in Timaru this morning early, but the weather has now broken. In the Mackenzie Country, snow, which was preceded by rain, began to fall on Saturday afternoon and when it ceased at. night six inches had fallen at Lake' Tekapo. At Sawdon and down as far as Burke’s Pass there was up to nine inches of snow and other parts of the Mackenzie Country were covered to varying depths. Yesterday rain continued to fall in the back country and the recording at Tekapo House at midday was 2.5 inches which had fallen since Saturday morning.

Sheep farmers in the Mackenzie Country say they have never known such a heavy fall of snow in January and predict heavy losses amongst newly-shorn sheep.
