AMERICAN VIEW AMAZING FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. PRIME MINISTER IN STRONG POSITION. NEW YORK. January 13. The London correspondent of the “New York Times” says that the freedom of expression in Britain after four months of war is amazing compared with France today or the United States in the last war. Recently-published articles have blamed Mr Chamberlain’s appeasement policy for the outbreak of the war. Letters in the newspapers dwell more on Britain’s than on Germany s faults. Left Wing publications even debate whether the war merits support. The correspondent adds that Mr Chamberlain seems to be rejuvenated. He is in full command without a formidable rival and is more strongly supported than when lie was striving for peace at Munich. He is now as determined to defeat Hitler as he was previously to conciliate. His strength lies in the fact that in both policies he has been represented by the major currents of British opinion.
