WESTERN FRONT

MOST VIOLENT CANNONADE OF WAR AIR FORCES ACTIVE ON BOTH SIDES. GERMAN PLANE BROUGHT DOWN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, LONDON, January 13. The most violent cannonade of the east Moselle sector since the outbreak of the war started at I p.m. today, states a Paris message. Planes were active and flew over Luxemburg. Shells falling in Luxemburg caused craters, the depth of which indicated that, guns of a heavier calibre were being used. The French official evening communique states: —“There was increased artillery activity on various points on the front between the Blies and Rhine Rivers. The air forces have been active on both sides.” Today’s German communique states: “Apart from isolated nightly flights, which again were partly carried out by violating Dutch neutrality, there have been no important events on the Western front.”

Daventry states that the Western Front is reported to be fairly quiet, with infantry carrying out the usual patrols and reconnaissances, and artillery fire at. various points. Both sides are active in the air. German machines made a long reconnaissance flight over north and east France, and one was brought down. Allied planes carried out reconnoitring and photographing work over the German lines, and French machines flew far into South Germany. A QUIET NIGHT (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, January 14. This morning's French official communique states: “There was a quiet night. On Saturday an enemy plane was brought down within our lines.” The evening communique states: "There was nothing of importance to report, during the day.”
