PRIVATIONS IN GERMANY 5 ACUTE SHORTAGE OF FUEL. RIVERS & CANALS ICE-BOUND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, January 12. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says that Germany is facing the severest winter for years. The temperatures are 36 to 46 degrees (Fahr.) below freezing point. AH the rivers and canals are ice-bound, resulting in an acute sho’rtage of fuel, 35 per cent of which is transported by water.
Shops and cafes are closing because of the lack of central heating, and there is,an acute shortage of all vegetables.
On the other hand, 300.000 Germans are working in intense heat in the iron and steel works and in the mines, getting a quart of Russian tea daily' to sustain their strength.
