Sighting of Graf Spee.
One of the two ratings in H.M.S. Achilles —Brush and Weston—mentioned in the cablegrams about the action against the Admiral Graf Spee as having earned Captain Parry's sovereign for sighting an enemy warship, is believed to belong to Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs W. N. Weston, Park Road. Palmerston North, are practically certain that the Weston mentioned by Captain Parry is their son, Seaman Ivan Weston, who joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy last June. He was at home on -a fortnight's leave in August, but at the end of a week was ordered to report at the base. Since then his parents have had only a few letters from their son, in which news of his whereabouts was scanty. Seaman Weston is not yet 20 years of age.
Sandy was expecting a guest, so there was great preparation at teatime. "Mary,” said he to his wife, “ye'll be sure to put the best sugar tongs on the table for McTavish to use?” “The tongs. Sandy?” said she. surprised. "Why. we've only got the granulated sugar.’’ “Aye." said Sandy, “Ah'm aware o' that—that's why I want the tongs in use!"
