PERSONAL

Mr McCartney, Wellington, is at the Hotel Midland, today. Mr R. Leighton. Wellington, was recently at the Empire Hotel. Masterton. Mr Jack Lulham. of the Masterton Fire Brigade staff, left yesterday on a visit to Wellington.

C. D. Weller. Wanganui. New Zealand cross-country champion, has been accepted for the second echelon of the Second New Zealand ExpeditionaryForce. He will leave for camp next week.

In the last day or two the following have been South Island guests at the Empire Hotel,' Masterton:—Messrs A. S. Murray and J. Millar, Otago; W. Read, P. Campbell and A. Campbelt, Southland.

Mr Norman Goffin. who has been bandmaster for the Christchurch Salvation Army Band for several years, has been appointed a band conductor with the First Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, with the rank of lieutenant. Lieutenant Goffin is a son of Major H. C. Goffin. who is in charge of the Wellington Salvation Army Band. The death occurred at Winton yesterday of Mr John Ronald Hamilton, a former member of Parliament for Awarua, and brother of the Leader of the Opposition. Mr Adam Hamilton, says a Press Association message from Invercargill. He took a prominent part in public affairs in Southland till a few years ago. In a political career covering 17 years, Mr Hamilton was elected to Parliament for two terms. He had the distinction of beating Sir Joseph Ward. Mr Hamilton was born in Southland, a son of Mr and Mrs John Hamilton. He became a partner in the firm of Hamilton and Co. He contested the Awarua seat in 1911 and 1914, and became a member in 1919, when he defeated Sir Joseph Ward. In 1922 he was defeated by Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, but was again elected for the 1925-28 term. He was a member of the Dairy Control Board in 1924.
