WHEAT CROPS
PROSPECTS IN CANTERBURY. AVERAGE YIELD ABOUT THIRTY BUSHELS. (By Telegraph—Press Asociation.) CHRISTCHURCH, Janaury 12. An average yield of about 30 bushels of wheat an acre may be expected from crops in Canterbury this season, according to information given by the fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, Mr M. McGillivray. Mr McGillivray, who had just returned. from a tour of the province, said that, about 30 bushels an acre might be expected as the average wheat yield from crops he had seen in every district from North Canterbury to Waimate. There were some poor crops, but there were some exceptionally good ones, specially among those early sown on heavier types of soil. Some spring-sown crops looked rather sick, but in places good rain would assist them to give reasonable yield.
In all districts wheat was coming on very fast. South Canterbury crops seemed to be about as far advanced as those in North Canterbury. The amount of disease in. this season’s crops did not seem to be. great Generally. Mr McGillivray thought that the yield would be above the expectations of farmers, because the tillering of plants had been good. He had seen few light crops, but there were some on light land that had been brought on prematurely, and, therefore, could not be expected to yield good quality grain.
