PROVISION FOR WAIRARAPA ENLISTMENTS.

Enlistments for the forestry unit for service overseas are now being received at the Masterton office of the State Forest Service. Perry Street. The unit is being established in response to a request by the British Government for a forestry company for logging and sawmilling service.

In a statement concerning the appear the Commissioner of State Forests, the Hon. F. Langstone, states: "Timber is no less a vital munition of war than steel and other raw materials. Sawn timber is required for the construction of barracks, hospitals, warehouses, field shelters and fortifications; fuel wqod' for cooking and warmth: rail sleepers for transportation; constructional timbers for bridges, trestles, docks, etc.; poles for communication and power lines; and stakes and pickets for wire entanglements. Enormous quantities are required both in the actual war zones and in the zones of the rear, and m the last great conflict there was produced and used annually in France a quantity several times ths •>nual production of all timber in New Zealand, with lens of thousands of experienced loggers and sawmill operatives contributed by the British. French. Canadian and American allies. Hence the invitation to New Zealand with its high reputation for forestry, logging ; nd sawmill activities to contribute a unit for the present conflict."
