OTAGO WOOL
RESULT OF APPRAISAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Janaury 11. A total of 21,250 bales of wool from the Otago province was valued by official appraisers last month, the value being fixed at £358,222 14s lOd, an average of £l6 17s 2d a bale. In December of last year the first clip of the season was sold by auction, and the 23,429 bales sold realised £306,534, or an average of £l3 Is 3d a bale. The advance of £3 15s lid a bale under the appraisement plan really represents a higher return to growers than is indicated, as under sale by auction the producer would have to pay commission and offering charges. Under the appraisement plan these charges, which represent about id a lb are borne by the British Government. The charges mean a considerable amount on a total of 21,250 bales.
Next appraisal in Dunedin will begin on Janaury 20, and will be followed by a third appraisal on February 19.
