AMATEUR ATHLETICS
EVENTS AT LAST NIGHT’S MEETING FAST TIMES RECORDED. SOME INTERESTING RACING. In the presence of a good muster of spectators, the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club held another series of its evening meetings last night. The weather conditions were ideal and fast times were recorded. The 75 yards senior, the opening event, resulted in a win for E. Martin. J. Polson, the second man, ran a welljudged race with plenty of pace over the last ten yards. J. Eastwood, the scratch marker, was well up into third position. Fast time was recorded in the senior half-mile, wh&'n W. M. Sellar fought a thrilling finish with R. Wyeth to win by a foot. These two competitors off the same handicap ran together all the distance, passing the rest of the field with 220 yards to go. B. Patrick ran a good race to finish very strongly in the third position. In the junior half-mile' P. O’Brien, closely followed by P. Reynolds, made the pace, holding their lead for a lap and a half, and had the scratch men. S. Faulknor and B. Falloon, doing their best to reduce the gap. and in a slashing finish lasting a 100 yards. Falloon won by inches from M. Doyle, with P. O’Brien the same distance away third. J. Eastwood ran true to form in the 220 yards, winning a strongly contested race by a foot from D. Stratton and B. McPherson in a time which shows he is fast approaching championship form. An interesting race on the programme was the ladies’ 220 yards handicap. The winner, Miss J. Grantham, proved her ability to run this distance, and despite the fact that the field was weak numerically, the time registered was exceptionally good. In the cycling events, although entries have not been particularly strong, those competing turned on some thrilling contests. The school children’s events have always proved very popular at these runs, and in this connection it is interesting to note that several of the most promising juniors have graduated from these ranks. The latest to attract notice is the diminutive T. Patete, who shows extraordinary speed for so small a youngster. Detailed results are:— 75 yards senior handicap: E. Martin 1, J. Polson 2, J.
