COALITION MOOTED
AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DISCUSSIONS WITH COUNTRY PARTY. ALLOCATION OF PORTFOLIOS IN DISPUTE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE. January 10. Discussions which may lead to the formation of a composite Federal Ministry took place between the Prime Minister. Mr IL (I. Menzies, and the Leader of the Country Party, Mr A. Cl. Cameron, today. Xu decisions have been announced, but it is believed that a coalition will bo effected soon.
The main stumbling block is the number of seats in the Cabinet to be granted to the Country Party. It is understood that a demand by Mr Cameron for five seats was resisted by Mr Menzies, who may be willing to grant, four. Mr Menzies, while unwilling to sacrifice present members of Cabinet, may be prepared to do so if he is assured of harmony and cooperation by the Country Party in the conduct of the war. Another difficulty confronting Mr Menzies is that the influence of the former Country Party leader. Sir Earle Page, may be felt if any of his supporters are included in the Cabinet.
