BRITISH IN FRANCE
CONSIDERABLE SECTOR OCCUPIED TROOPS IN DAILY CONTACT WITH ENEMY. CLUMSY NAZI DENIAL. The German news agency, in claiming the capture of a British officer on the Western Front, says the patrol tried to reach the German advance posts under cover of fog, a Daventry report states. They were observed in time, allowed to approach, and then fired upon, and then they withdrew. Afterward, the Germans found the British officer, who, it was claimed, was injured, and later died in hospital. However, the German official news agency still refuses to admit that British troops are in the lines. In actual fact, the British forces in France now hold a considerable sector and are in direct contact with the enemy.—By radio.
TROOPS FROM CYPRUS
FIRST FROM BRITISH COLONY TO REACH FRANCE. LONDON, Janaury 9. Today’s dispatches from France announce the arrival there of the first troops from a British colony, these being Cypriot transport units. The Cypriot contingent was enlisted in the early days of the war, and their departure from the colony two months ago was accompanied by scenes of great enthusiasm. The last two months have been spent in intensive training. Cyprus will be proud to have the privilege of providing the first colonial unit to join the British troops on active service in the theatre of war. It is believed that it is the first occasion on which Cypriot and British troops have been associated.
