“PYGMALION” IN BERLIN

BERNARD SHAW OBJECTS. IS IT HIS PLAY? A play called "Pygmalion" is being produced al the Deutsches Theatre. Berlin. It is being billed as "by Bernard Shaw.” but actually is an adaptation. "1 have no objection to their playing ‘Pygmalion' in the original iorm. for it has been a popular success in Germany for 20 years," G.B.S. told the London Daily Herald. "But I have the strongest objection to their putting on another play and calling it 'Pygmalion.' "If they have altered it. it is not my play. In any case. I cannot collect my royalties.” The German papers claim that the alterations would have Shaw's approval. and that the effect of the changes has been to turn a comedy into a drama. "That’s nothing." chuckled Shaw, • ‘Pygmalion’ has always been as much a drama as a comedy."
