NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. DEARE, AUCKLAND, LEADS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Play in the New Zealand Centennial Bowls Tournament was continued in Wellington yesterday in fine weather. The singles was carried a further stage and one two-lifer, G. H. Deare (Carlton, Auckland), and five one-lifers, J. R. Smith (Kelburn) M. J. Squire (Hawera). C. Spearman (Sydenham), W. Whittaker (Onehunga), and H. Rolls (Featherston), are left to contest the final series. ELIMINATION ROUNDS. At the conclusion of the morning play two rounds 18 players were still left in, three of them being two-lifers. These were Rolls. Deare, and Austin. Two further elimination rounds were played on the Wellington green with the following results: — First round: Deare 21, Rolls 12; Smith 15, Austin 14; Whittle 19, Bond 13; Squire 20, Brighting 17; Gray 17, Griffiths 12; Spearman 16, Dowland 11; Carswell 25, Hawkins 13; Whittaker 16, Bull 15; McMurchy 18, Johnson 8. Bond, Brighting, Griffiths, Dowland. Hawkins, Bull and Johnson, each of whom had one life, were eliminated. Second round: Deare, a bye; Rolls 19, Austin 10; Smith 17, Whittle 16; Squire 21, Gray 20; Spearman 19, Carswell 12; Whittaker 19, McMurchy 9.
