BRITISH OFFICER
DEATH ON THE WESTERN FRONT LEFT BEHIND WOUNDED. CARED FOR BY GERMANS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) BERLIN. January 9. It is officially stated that the first British officer captured on the Western Front, an artilleryman who was found seriously wounded, has died in hospital. The officer was left behind after a French reconnaissance west of Merzig, which the Germans repulsed in a sharp fight. They gave the wounded officer every care and hastened him to a hospital. It is believed that he participated in the reconnaissance as an observer. The Germans are surprised that he was left behind, inasmuch as the repulsed troops carried back other wounded men.
