CENTENNIAL BUILDING

OPENED IN HOKITIKA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HOKITIKA, Janaury 9. The first public ceremony in connection with the Centennial celebrations took place yesterday afternoon, when the Westland County Council Centennial Chambers, a fine large structure erected at a cost of £2OOO, was officially opened by Mr James O’Brien. Member for Westland. The building is eminently suitable for its purpose and has been erected in the centre of the town. There was a large attendance and many complimentary references were made. It was mentioned that the council at present has no debt. The new building is the first owned by the council, it having previously occupied disused Provincial and Departmental offices. Speakers all agreed that the further progress of South Westland would be greatly assisted by the extension of the railway from Ross to Wataroa.
