Will Eventually Make His Mark. One of the best performances among the hacks at Ellerslie was the effort of Saccone in the Waitemata Handicap. Ridden a very patient race by W. J. Broughton, Saccone tailed the field until the straight entrance and then finished on the outside with a very determined run to win going away. Saccone appeared later in the meeting, when he contested the A.R.C. Handicap, and his effort in this company left little doubt that he will eventually make his mark in open company. He has been nominated for the Goldfields Cup at Thames and the Takapuna Cup. both of which are to be decided this month.

Southlanders in Centennial Cup. Doubleack and Mona's Song are two Southlanders engaged in the Centennial Cup. Doubleack beat a strong field over 10£ furlongs at Wingatui, and then went on to win the Wyndham Cup and finished second to Mona’s Song in the Southland Cup. He looks a promising young stayer. He is a four-year-old gelding by Balboa from Morse Signal, which is not a stud book family. Mona’s Song has raced solidly and was third to Sovereign Lady and Norseman in the Otago Handicap, second to Passaform in the Invercargill Cup, and won the Southland Cup. With Norseman and Thermidor also in the Centennial field the southern half of the South Island is well represented.
