CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting last night of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows (Manchester Unity) was presided over by P.G. Bro C. E. White, in the absence of the N.G. There was a fair attendance of members. Season’s greetings were received from the Grand Master and Wellington District Officers and Management Committee, the N.G. and officers of Loyal Masterton Lodge and the Loyal Oamaru Lodge (Otago district). Bro P. R. Chaplin notified that he was to leave New Zealand with the first echelon and that his regimental number was 6039. He extended the season’s greetings to members and. thanked them for the good wishes extended to him. The secretary reported that P.G. Bro A. Steffert had been passed for service overseas and would leave with the second echelon. He had joined up with the Auckland division. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Carterton Friendly Societies' Council that when members of lodges in the Carterton district were leaving for service overseas they be given an official send off and that the council be asked to arrange any such function. Accounts amounting to £29 12s 4d. including sick pay £l7 10s. were passed for payment. , AN OLD ODD FELLOW SEVENTY YEARS A MEMBER. At last night’s meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge reference was made to the fact that Brother John Fensham, of Richmond Road, Carterton, would on Monday, January 15, have attained 70. years of membership of the Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows. Bro Fensham joined the Rose of Valley Lodge, Lower Hutt, in 1870, and on February 3, 1878, became a member of the Heart of Oak Lodge, Carterton. Bro Fensham was born 87 years ago, and still enjoys fairly good health. He can recite many incidents of the early days in the Hutt Valley during'the Maori unrest. It was resolved that the secretary write to Bro Fensham, complimenting him upon his long period of membership. During his membership Bro Fensham has more than once served with credit as an officer of his lodge, the last time when he had been a member for over 50 years. It was decided that several of the older members along with the N.G. of the Lodge and the secretary .make a call upon Bro Fensham at his residence on Monday evening next to mark the occasion of his lengthy membership. The secretary was instructed to get into touch with the older- members for this purpose. GUN CLUB CLAY BIRD COMPETITIONS. There was a fair attendance at a week-end clay-bird shoot held by the Carterton Gun Club. The following were the results: — Nine-bird match.—R. Williams (14), 9; R. Fuge (12), 6; W. Moroney (12), 6. Yankee shoot, 10 birds. —Rex Walker and L. Smith, 9 birds each. Ten-bird match. —M. Kiddie; 10 birds; R. Walker, 9 birds. Ten-bird match—L. Smith, 7; R. Fuge and G. A. Vincent, 6 each. Gimcrack shoot. —L. Smith started from 13 yards and finished at 19, and shot 6 birds. B. Williams started from 11 yards and finished at 15. He secured 5 birds. Second Gimcrack match. —R. Fuge (12), L. Smith (15). R. Williams (13), B. Williams (11). Each got 5 birds. They fired off for the trophy, first miss out, R. Williams winning from the 21 yards mark. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Raymond Phillpotts, of Gisborne, were in Carterton yesterday - visiting old friends. Mr and Mrs Hurndell and family, of Park Road, Carterton, returned on Saturday from Cape Palliser, after having enjoyed Christmas and New Year holidays at the seaside. They report having had a splendid time fishing. __________
