Shield series, between Auckland and ~ Canterbury, which was continued at Eden Park in brilliant weather today, j definitely swung in favour of the home ( side. 1 With two valuable wickets lost for ( 50 runs. Auckland seemed likely to j have to fight hard to pass Canterbury’s total of 227. but the local batsmen found their feet today, and at stumps the score was 545 for seven wickets. With a lead of more than 300 runs and two days' play still left, Auckland seems in an excellent position to secure an outright victory. Wallace was confidently appealed against for leg before early in his innings, but nevertheless provided the feature of the day’s play. Realising that a solid innings was required to establish an advantage, he faced up to the varied Canterbury attack in dour manner, occasionally brightening play with some brisk hittingn. He and Pearson, who played a valuable innings for 43, added 107 runs for the third wicket, and Wallace carried on to give a splendid display of 211. He reached his first 100 in 134 minutes, his second in 268 minutes, and was at the crease altogether for four hours, 52 minutes. Three fine sixes, lifted high over square leg’s head off Mcßae, and 16 fours, were included in his score.
