OPENING PLAY IN CENTENNIAL CONTEST SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS. SOME FIRST ROUND RESULTS. (By Telegraph—Press Asociation.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The New Zealand Bowling Championships Centennial Tournament opened this morning in warm weather. Approximately 800 players are competing in the singles, pairs and rinks; a record entry for Wellington. The singles attracted 288 entries., the pairs 266 and the rinks 172. Play began this morning on 18 greens for the singles championship, which is held by W. C. Franks, Balmoral Club, Auckland, who is not defending his title this year. Another notable absentee is Professor Maxwell Walker, who has won the event three times.
