Amid the general celebration of the victory over the Admiral Graf Spee one of the Achilles’ New Zealand ratings expressed keen disappointment at one phase of the battle. He explained that when the order was given to stand by to release torpedoes he hurriedly wrote on the heads of four torpedoes, "Greetings to Herr Hitler,” but the Ajax manoeuvred in between, preventing the Achilles loosing her torpedoes. However, two ratings, Brush and Weston, were winners of Captain Parry’s one sovereign premium for sighting an enemy warship, and were thoroughly happy. They said they were keeping them permanently as sou ven i rs. _______
