The Dail, by 92 votes to 10, passed 'the second reading of Mr Boland’s Emergency Powers Bill authorising the internment of suspected persons without trial. Later the Dail finally passed the Bill by 82 votes to nine. It will come before the Senate at 3 p.m. today. Mr de Valera, replying to Mr W. T. Cosgrave’s criticism, said: "Everyone knows that armed men are at large, who generally do not want to recognise the Constitution, and are ready to use arms whenever it suits them. They are prepared to embroil Eire with her neighbours. The Irish people have given the Government the sole power of determining how national policy is to be prosecuted.” DETECTIVE KILLED SHOT BY I.R.A. MEMBER. LONDON, January 3. Three patrolling detectives challenged two men whom they knew to be members of the I.R.A. One of the men immediately fired, hitting Detective Officer Roche near the heart. His colleagues were about to draw their revolvers when a crowd rushed to their assistance. Both men were detained. A later message states that Detective Roche died at 2.30 p.m. The shooting occurred in Patrick Street, Cork's principal thoroughfare. DEATH SENTENCES REPRESENTATIONS TO BRITAIN. LONDON. January 3. The Eire Government, after demands by public bodies lor intervention, lias’made representations to Britain regarding the members of the I.R.A. who were sentenced to death CAPTURED TERRORISTS. WILL BE HELD REGARDLESS OF HUNGER STRIKES. (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) DUBLIN. January 4. Mr Boland told the Dail that captured terrorists will be held regardless of hunger strikes.
