BOWLING

WAIRARAPA CENTRE NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. Round play in the Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s New Year tournament was completed yesterday afternoon, the leading rink in the A section being Johnson’s with five wins, and that in the B section Higgison’s with 51 wins. At the end of round play the wins secured by the various rinks were:— Section A: Johnson 5; Hunter 41; Nielsen. Reid 4; Carter, Hughan, 3; Riggs, Knell 2: Brown 11; Weller 1. Section B: Higgison 51; Brownie 4; Morton 31; Martin, Christian 3; Carstens. Hart 2; Macpherson 1. Following are the results of the concluding rounds:— Section A. Fifth round: Knell beat Brown; Hunter beat Reid; Nielsen beat Carter; Hughan beat Johnson; Riggs beat Weller. Sixth round: Riggs beat Brown; Hunter beat Nielsen; Johnson beat Carter; Hughan beat Knell; Reid beat Weller. B Section. Fifth round: Brownie beat Morton; Higgison beat Martin: Christian beat Macpherson; Hart beat Carstens. Sixth round: Morton beat Macpherson: Higgison beat Hart: Martin beat Carstens; Brownie beat Christian. WIN FOR HIGGISON’S RINK. The final was played this morning between a Greytown rink, Kilgour. Brunton, Defines. Higgison (s) and a Palmerston North rink. Thompson. Moxom. Croucher, Johnson (s). Bowling of an exceptionally high standard was seen, the Greytown rink being more consistent than its opponent. Johnson, the Palmerston North skip, played very fine bowls. The green was in beautiful order. Higgison’s rink won on the 20th head by 26 points to 13. At the 10th head the scores were 13 to 6 and at the 15ih head 19 to 10 in favour of Higgison’s rink. Mr G. Hayne. president of the centre, presented the trophies and congratulated the winners on their excellent performance.
