BYRD EXPEDITION
A FRIENDLY FAREWELL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 2. The North Star was to have sailed this evening for the Antarctic, but because of a strong south-west wind creating heavy seas outside the heads, her final departure for the far south was delayed till early tomorrow morning. Word received by radio from the Bear of Oakland during the day stated that she was already among the ice about a week's sail from Dunedin. The North Star is expected to reach the ice barrier in eight, or 10 days time. After she has left members of the expedition and her valuable cargo on the Antarctic Continent she will sail for Valparaiso to take on board further supplies for men at the two bases. Admiral Byrd, in a farewell message, stated: "We always look forward with great anticipation to our visits to New Zealand, and it is with keen regret that we leave. New Zealanders are the friendliest people in the world, and in particular we give our deep and enduring appreciation to their wonderful hospitality.”
