AIRMEN DECORATED
DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS AWARD TO PILOT-OFFICER F. H. LONG. RECOGNITION OF GALLANTRY & SKILL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON. January 2. His Majesty has awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross to the New Zealand Pilot-Officers Kenneth Neil Gray, of Christchurch, and Frank Hugh Long, of Masterton, pilot and navigator respectively on a night reconnaissance flight over enemy territory during a November snowstorm. The plane was badly subjected to anti-aircraft fire. Nevertheless the flight was continued, but it was impossible to reach the objective, the weather rendering it practically impossible to control the plane. The upper surface of one wing was half off and the other was stripped of fabric. One flap was jammed -down and the wireless failed. The homeward journey involved a flight of 342 miles over sea. It was mainly due to the skill, courage, and splendid teamwork of PilotOfficers Gray and Long that the plane and its crew were safely brought back.
