PLUNKET SHIELD

EASY WIN FOR AUCKLAND. OTAGO SUFFERS INNINGS DEFEAT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 2. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Otago was concluded at Eden Park at 3 o’clock this afternoon, the home side winning by an innings and 169 runs. Otago scored 194 in the first innings and 133 in the second against Auckland’s first innings total of 496. Light showers delayed the start of play this morning for half an hour, but the wicket was not affected and later the weather cleared. The attendance was small, the takings being only £33. making a total for the three days of £254.

After a fairly promising start Otago weakened in face of a strong Auckland attack and gave an even more dismal exhibition than in the first innings. The partnership between Cutler (33) and Holden (36), which added 60 runs, was the only bright feature of the Otago innings. Cutler was more forceful than previously and revealed some excellent strokes., .while Holden was very cautious and seldom attacked the bowling. ■ A collapse started with the fall of the third wicket and continued to the finish.

Cowie, heartened by early success, bowled splendidly, at times making the ball lift disconcertingly, while he also secured q great deal of pace. He bowled 21 overs, two of which were maidens, in taking six for 44. Variety was provided at the other end by Burke, a slow spin bowler, who secured three for 39 off 13 overs. HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE.
