TALKALOT DESTROYED
i — j BREAKS LEG WHILE TRAINING. SYDNEY, January 2. Talkalot broke a leg during a training gallop today and was destroyed.
The Consistent Te Hai. Notium made another game effort to repeat his first day's success in the Malone Memorial at Stratford yesterday. but he found the task of conceding the consistent Te Hai a stone and a half too great. Bronze Step acted as the pacemaker in the early stages from Te Hai and Eastern Heir, with Ned Cuttle and Notium fairly well back. Te Hai joined Bronze Step approaching the straight, and held her measure at the distance, where Notium momentarily appeared dangerous, but Te Hai showed no signs of stopping, and scored comfortably. Brilliant Win for Beau Vite. Splendidly ridden by H. N. Wiggins, Beau Vite won the Clifford Plate at Auckland yesterday from end to end, again beating the brilliant Beaulivre, who was installed a good favourite in spite of his beating in the Great Northern Derby. Beau Vite had a lead of three lengths without an effort while the pace was slow early and Wiggins allowed him to stride along at a good speed in front and at the same time keeping something in reserve. P. Atkins on Beaulivre was waiting for a final sprint home and had his mount handy at the turn. Once in line for the post Beaulivre challenged and momentarily it appeared as if he would win. However, Beau Vite proved the better stayer and was drawing away at the end to win by half a length. Beau Vite is a colt of fine physique and is undoubtedly better than he revealed in Australia in the spring, when he did not have the best of luck. Perhaps if he goes back in the autumn he will prove a much more formidable rival for Reading and High Caste. Passaform Runs Well. Sailing Lady and Night Wings were the favourites for the Invercargill Cup yesterday, but both failed to finish in. the money. When the field had settled down, Sailing Lady had charge from Alma, Mona’s Song and Wild Career. Spanish Lad joined Sailing Lady in the lead racing into the back. Sailing Lady was pulling double all the way and she was beaten at the home turn where Mona’s Song took charge and led Spanish Lad, Peony Rose, Alma, Night Wings and Passaform into the straight. Passaform took charge at the distance and he came right away to beat Mona’s Song by two lengths. Passaform was last at the half-mile but over the last furlong he gave nothing else a chance. With the sting out of the track, conditions suited him.
First Win Beyond Mile. Laughing Lass scored her first win beyond a mile in the Aidworth Stakes at Marton yesterday. She got a perfect run in behind the pacemaker, Old Surrey, with Play On outside her, and in the straight, when Old Surrey tired, Laughing Lass drew ahead. She had to be ridden out to hold off Play On, but the latter never really looked like getting her. Lady Montana ran last all the way after losing some ground at the start. Play On ran a much better race than on the first day in the Marton Cup.
