A fire broke out shortly before midnight in the Apostolic Chancellery and the famous adjacent Church of San Lorenzo. The fire brigade, hampered by' bitterly cold weather, did not succeed in quelling the blaze till, at 5 a.m. the cupola of the Chancellery crashed. Most of one wing of the church was destroyed. Priceless tapestries and some frescoes in the Chancellery are reported to be completely ruined, but a number of art treasures were saved. ______
