Mr J. B. Smith, of Whangarei, who had been on a visit to Featherston, has left for Wellington. Lieutenant-Colonel J. R. Gray, has been appointed ofi'icer-in-charge of the infantry battalion of the First Echelon. Dr E. W. Kembell, Wellington, isvisiting Masterton. He is a guest at the Hotel Midland. Mr G. D. Jobson and Miss M. Jobson, Gisborne, are at the Hotel Midland, Masterton. Mr and Mrs Bruce Beale and Miss Beale. Tauranga, are guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton. The Rev E. Chard, of Perth, Australia, has been appointed assistant priest at St Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton. Mr' and Mrs H. B. Livingstone and Miss J. Livingstone, Gisborne, are staying at. the Midland Hotel, Masterton. Visitors from Wellington to the Mid-, land Hotel. Masterton. are Mr and Mrs E. D. Barber, the Misses Pirie, and Mr Higgins. A London cable states that Patrick George Murray, of Nelson, a member of the Royal Corps of Signals, was accidentally killed on duty. Weekend guests at the Hotel Midland. Masterton, were Mr and Mrs F. H. Porter. Mr and Mrs F. McKay, Mr and Mrs J. Slacke Messrs J. Tanner and Lutherans, all of Wellington. Dr W. H. Riddell. Charge d'Affaires at the Canadian Legation at Washington. has been appointed High Commissioner to New Zealand. Dr Riddell was for 12 years Canadian representative at the League of Nations and was earlier Minister of Labour in Ontario. The death occurred at Crawley. Sussex, on December 1 of Mr John Henry Grant, formerly of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Grant was a member of the bank's London staff for more than 40 years, and before he retired 10 years ago had been secretary to the London board of directors for 15 years. The Air Ministry announces New Year temporary promotions of the following New Zealanders, a cablegram states: —Group Captain to Air Commodore: F. IT. M. Maynard, of Wniuku; Wing Commander to Group Captain: H. B. Russell, of Hastings; Flight Lieutenants to Squadron Leaders: D. P. Lee. of Auckland, and T. G. LovellGregg of Wanganui.
