QUIET EVENING
LATE SHOPPING OBSERVED. LAST NIGHT. The fact that the late shopping night last evening did not fall on New Year’s Eve probably accounted for the smaller assemblage in Queen Street than is usual on such occasions. Moreover the festivities associated with New Year’s Eve were absent, and apart from the explosion of a few crackers, the town was remarkably quiet. The separation of late shopping night from New Year's Eve will probably mem that tonight likewise will be a quiet one of its kind. Shopkeepers report that trade last night was comparable to that of an ordinary Friday night. On the other hand the month of December, in many cases, had been the best for many years. Once again the Borough Traffic inspector (Mr John McGregor) moved several cars from the main street, which was roped off for pedestrian traffic only.
