CARTERTON
SOLDIERS FAREWELLED PRIVATE HUMPHRIES HONOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Tuesday evening the Parkvale Hall was filled when the residents of the Carterton and Parkvale districts gathered to farewell Private H. Humphries, who has been on final holiday leave, and who has been staying with his mother at Hilton Rd, Carterton. The time was spent in games, dancing, songs, etc. Items were given by Miss Mavis Geange (Scotch dances) who was accompanied on the pipes by Piper Peter Fisher. She received an enthusiastic encore. Mrs Jas Turley gave a much appreciated recitation. Music for the dancing was played by Mrs V. J. Ashton, Miss Mary Herrick, and Leith Hopkins. During the evening Mr B. Roberts, M.P., on behalf of those assembled, made a presentation to Private Humphries and in doing so referred to the departing guest as a very worthy resident of the Carterton district, who had made many friends and who was held in high esteem. Private Humphries would, along with many brave young men, leave New Zealand with the first Echelon for service overseas, and he had no hesitation in saying that their guest would uphold the great traditions of New Zealand soldiers while away. They all wished him the best of luck and a safe return. On behalf of his many friends he had pleasure in asking Private Humphries to accept an Eversharp pencil and a shaving outfit and companion, Cheers and the singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” followed, after which Private Humphries thanked everyone for their kindness and for the presents which would always remind him of his friends in Carterton and Parkvale district while on active service. Dancing was continued and at the close of the gathering everyone joined hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne. Private Humphries left today for camp. Last Friday some close friends of Private Humphries presented him with a luminous dial wristlet watch, an act which was very warmly appreciated by the recipient. BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card evening under the jurisdiction of the Boy Scouts was held last evening. Owing to the boisterous weather conditions there was not a large attendance. The prizes were won by Mesdames Edwards. Challis and C. Meyrick and Messrs F. Hyde and G. Challis. Personal Items. Miss Ingley, of Belvedere Street, Carterton, has gone to Dunedin to spend a holiday. Mr and Mrs Stack, of Kent Street, are spending the holidays in Gisborne. Mr and Mrs J. Kay, of Timaru, are the guests of Mr and Mrs S. Kay, Anderson’s Line. Mr J. A. McCash, of the Railways Parcels Department, Wellington, was in Carterton yesterday, visiting friends. He was on his way back to duty after having spent a motor holiday in the north. Mr Fred Jackson, who has faithfullycarried out the duties of mail contractor between the Carterton Post Office and the railway, is relinquishing the work after the end of the year, after having been connected with the work for the past 17 years. Mr Ben Sewell will succeed him. During his long service with the Post Office Mr Jackson has made many friends and he will be missed by the travelling public. Mr and Mrs McMellien, of Auckland, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Ingley. Belvedere Street. Mr Rex Lawrence, of the Bank of New South Wales staff at Rotorua, who has been home for Christmas, returned io Rotorua yesterday. Mr C. W. Gaze, who has been an inmate of Masterton Hospital and who was home for Christmas, has found it necessary to re-enter the hospital for a further operation.
