SCARECROW DANCE

RAY BOLGER IN THE "WIZARD OF OZ." Creating an illusion of lacking a single joint in his' whole body, Ray Bolger's scarecrow dance in “The Wizard of Oz ’ has captured dancers as diverse as Balanchine and Paul Draper. Bolger, formerly a vacuum-cleaner salesman who worked in banks and insurance offices before lie became a janitor in a ballet school, has worked his way from touring companies into Broadway’s performance of "On Your Toes.” and the M.G.M. screen presentation of a classic among American children’s books. In Ihe Scarecrow Dance he takes fails which would send any other man into hospital, and the routine, danced in a ragged, loose costume filled with straw, took' two months to prepare.
